My dogs and cats love the whole sardines. :-)

Nora has had allergies and red, itchy skin for as long as I can remember -- basically ever since I adopted her as a 2 yr old and she's now almost 8. But since I've started her on a regimen of supplementing her diet with [Rara Avis] Healthy Powder and have switched from fish oil to the Ecopawz frozen fish, she has actually quit scratching!!! And her skin is now a healthy pink instead of inflamed red. You can't believe what a relief this is -- for both Nora and me. Thank you, thank you, [Rara Avis] and Ecopawz!

I just wanted to share how pleased I am with my ecopawz order and that I am looking forward to ordering again.

The first thing people ask: "Is it really okay to feed fish?" I've told them for years not to feed it unless they really know fish or they buy it from someone they can trust, so they are shocked when I am now recommending fish. I am so delighted to be able to suggest fish that I know are healthy and good for the animals. Thanks so much for your knowledge and expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I feed my pet seafood?

Seafood is a great source of vitamins – most notably Vitamins A, D, E and B, which aid in healthier skin and coat as well as strong teeth and bones. Seafood is also the best source for Omega-3’s which aid in heart health, neural development, continued mental health, reduced muscle soreness and fatigue, and averting blindness from macular degeneration and cataracts. By feeding the whole protein profile of seafood, and not oils or vitamin supplements, your pet's body can better absorb these important vitamins and nutrients.

I use fish oil, isn't that enough?

Fish oil is a great source of Omega-3's, but the process used to purify the product removes most other vitamins and minerals. Good quality fish oil is heavily processed using molecular distillation, which allows the product to be shelf-stable and relatively odor free but removes all of the other good qualities of seafood. Our product is the whole package, delivering the great benefits of Omega-3’s, all the vitamins and minerals associated with seafood, and offers easily digestible calories from a lean protein source.

What is salmon poisoning disease and should I be concerned?

All wild salmon and anadromous fish have a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola. This parasite is harmless by itself and is in a symbiotic state with the salmon. The danger to canines is when that parasite comes in contact with another parasite (Neorickettsia helminthoeca – a nematode or worm) that lives in snails found in some rivers and streams in the Pacific Northwest watersheds. Through this cycle, eggs from the nematode hatch in the canines’ stomachs causing massive dehydration, vomiting and death if untreated within a few weeks. We have consulted with the Department of Veterinary Parasitology at Washington State University, as well as the FDA’s guidelines on the preparation of raw fish for human consumption, and our processes far exceed any necessary to kill these parasites. In addition, our wild salmon is sourced from Alaska where the parasites that cause SPD cannot live. To summarize, our processing procedures are far more comprehensive than necessary to kill a parasite that cannot exist in our raw material! Take that helminthoeca!

Do you use farmed fish in your products?

All of our seafood comes from wild sustainably harvested fisheries. While we do support responsible aquaculture, we do not offer any farmed species.

What are the concerns about toxins in seafood?

Toxins are found in some seafood as is true with all animal protein whether found on land or sea. Many of the toxins associated with seafood originate in terrestrial farming operations and enter the ocean through agricultural and industrial runoff. Our sourcing program allows us to greatly limit risks by only using species known to be safer with lesser habitat exposure to industrial areas and pollution hot spots. We also work with seafood companies and industry regulatory committees to stay ahead of impending problems.

What makes EcoPawz™ environmentally friendly?

At EcoPawz, we have established strong relationships with the Bay Area's best seafood companies. By sourcing, producing, and distributing locally we greatly reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses generated. Through working closely with local companies, we have developed systems that allow us to get better utilization of the right fish. All of our products come from recognized sustainable and responsibly managed fisheries. We are also continuously working on better and greener methods to produce, store, and distribute our products. We would love to hear any recommendations on how to improve these processes.

How should I transition in EcoPawz™ product?

Our current product line is a very lightly processed product keeping us as close to the natural protein as possible. We are a 100% seafood product adding no grains, preservatives, or additives. With our pure seafood pedigree, we recommend feeding our product up to 25% or your animals dietary needs – and promote offering your companion animal a wide variety of other proteins and organic local flora to balance their diet. We suggest using our product in conjunction with other foods as an exact weight replacement. For example, if you normally feed 8 ounces of protein per meal, replace 3 ounces with EcoPawz™. As with all dietary changes, you are the best judge of your pets needs. Please consult your veterinarian whenever starting any new diets.

What should I expect when changing diets?

If you are already feeding a raw diet, adding EcoPawz™ should be seamless and incorporated as a healthy part of your pets overall diet. If you are new to raw feeding, or starting an animal on a raw diet that is used to kibble or heavily processed foods, you will need to slowly transition in raw foods. EcoPawz™ products are a great transitional product as they are an easily digestibly protein that can be used as bridge in conjunction with your traditional food to get to other heavier raw feeds. Variety is the spice of life and we embrace trying a wide range of raw products that you and your veterinarian trust!
